THE THÂN FAMILY
This is heard: ‘trees have their own roots; water, its own source’. That saying has been the instruction of our ancestors for ages; and it has become the moral philosophy of today.
The Thân family name was intrinsic Giáp family name. It originated from the highlands of Bắc Giang. The family members had been the Chiefs of Giáp cavernous area, Lạng mountain district. From the mountainous Hoa Lư, a place full of obstacle and difficult of access, to Thăng Long, a place rising up a site of a flying Dragon; Đại Việt (the Great Việt) country has unceasingly developed its own nation. From the position which was a place of its own, Giáp Cavernous area became a farthest northern frontier of Lý Dynasty. Vietnamese history marks the event of his Highness Giáp Thừa Quí, who became a Prince Consort in the first reign of the Lý Dynasty (1010 - 1225). The King favorably gave (changed) the family name Thân (甲[申) to him, thenceforth, he bore the name Thân Thừa Quí; and had been called the Progenitor of Thân family name with respect. Since then, his Highness opened a new historical era of the family in the national history of Vietnam. In succession, his descendants, Thân Thiệu Thái and Thân Cảnh Phúc, also became Prince Consorts.
The war of resistance against the Chinese Tống (Song) had come to a success (1075-1077); and, it marked the brilliant deserts of the talented Prince Consort and General Thân Cảnh Phúc, a Giáp Cavern angel. The festival of Hả Temple, which cites him for his merit through out the ages, has spread all over the country from the land of Lục Ngạn.
The Thân family has a descendant who was below one person and over thousands of others in the Twenty-eight Stars Club: Tao Đàn Vice-Marshal: Doctor of Philosophy, Đông Các Academician and Minister of Internal Affairs and Head Master of the Royal National University - Thân Nhân Trung, in Hồng Đức era. He lives forever with the most famous saying: “the virtuous talented are the unique essence of the Nation”. These words were carved on the stele at the Temple of Literature, honoring the names of the Doctors of Philosophy of the examination in the lunar year of the Dog - Nhâm Tuất (1442). From the beginning, one Than family had three members in three generations in turns being the Price Consort; then, in the Lê Reign, three members of a Thân family in turn being awarded the title Doctors of Philosophy. Recognizing the glory of Than family, the King gave it the words:
“The ten brothers of Trinh family succeeded continuously.
The two generations of the father and sons of Than family were royally honored nationwide.”
The events in the Left Palace Temple in Lạng Sơn worshipped a celebrity, a brilliant economist and diplomat Han the Duke: Thân Công Tài (1620 - 1683), the one who brightened a good commercial relation between Vietnam and China by setting up Kỳ Lừa town market. He was honored with the name Man- of- two-nations.
The Family Records is gloried by the national history; the Thân family has been tied to the destiny of the country since the Lý Reign throughout the journey in the millennium. The Thân family name is only one, which originated in Giáp cavernous area, immigrating to Thăng Long capital area, integrating in the expansion of the nation to the South, then to Gia Định area, and then to all over the world.
The Thân family tree is firm with the nation. Its branches have developed successfully with glorious records. No words are able to describe the merits of our ancestors.
Above are a few words to glorify their merits to the descendants. Let’s set our mind to the land of our ancestors; Let’s forever bear in mind our Family name! Let’s move forward to deserve the merits of our ancestors. Pride is of us!
Respectfully stated by the Than Descendants
